Ghost BoRbon - 1

Ghost BoRbon

We recently shared pictures of a clear acrylic BoRbon we’d mocked up and people went crazy! This was originally intended to be a display model, showing the inner workings of our standard BoRbon microphone – think Vistalite drums, Dan Armstrong guitars, clear grand pianos, and Wonder Woman’s plane. However, it soon became clear (pun intended) that this particular BoRbon had received so much love, we had to build a working one. Easy right? Surely we’d just have to stick the standard BoRbon inners into the clear acrylic body? If only it was that easy. We ended up creating a ‘naked’ transformer, removed the internal shielding, got rid of the external grill cloths and it looked ace! Then we tested it….

Although it sounded great, the microphone was picking up electromagnetic hum due to the lack of the internal shielding – no good if this was going to be used in a professional capacity. Was this just going to be a case of ‘the Emperor’s new clothes’? A quick rethink and the addition of some discrete shielding fixed the hum issue. We also swapped out the ribbon frame grills to provide extra protection, but they still allowed the ribbon to be visible and kept the ‘naked’ aesthetic.

The Ghost BoRbon was born.

We will be doing a limited run of Ghost BoRbon stereo sets, which we be available to pre-order shortly.
