Barkley McKay - Round Midnight (Piano)

Performed by: Barkley McKay

Barkley McKay at Valley Wood Studio plays ‘Round Midnight’ by Thelonious Monk. The piano is a Welmar grand.

The recordings were made using Blumlein stereo BMx2 ribbon microphones from Extinct Audio.

For the near field recording, a stereo BMx2 was placed about 6 inches back from the curve of the piano, pointing at the sound board. Neve-style preamps were used for this recording.

To show the difference that mic position can make, a second BMx2 was placed about 3 meters back from the piano, at head height, running directly into a Universal Audio Twin interface.

The tracks have been normalised to make comparison easier.
